- What do you do with students who show a lack of respect for adults, peers, their belongings, and the property of others?
- What can you do when you are confronted with students who are negative about rational requests and/or rules?

For students who frequently shift their attention I need to guide and keep them involved in interactive activities based on their potentialities. If the child loves Music may be ask him to work on writing a song, if he is a sports person -ask him to let me know the current news on sports and a variety of things you can work on.
ReplyDeleteWhen a student who calls out answers or comments during class or constantly calls out in class, even when they are supposed to be working quietly has to be reinforced constantly with class room rules with effective communication.
ReplyDeleteFor students who are negative about rules or rational requests. THe following strategies can be practiced:
ReplyDelete- Talk to the student to understand the negative attitude
- Give him examples of situations and consequences others had to go through when they didn't follow the rule
- Talk about an incident, the problem student had to face coz of not following the rule.
- Role - play the situation.

ReplyDeleteAntagonism with authority- To help the students to improve their interaction with authority figures, the authority must have a friendly and approachable nature. It should also have confidence and believe in their student's ability to make the students feel at ease which will further allow the students to trust and have cordial relationship with authorities.

ReplyDeleteArgumentative student - If a child becomes argumentative upon confrontation I would prefer not to confront the child in a group and keep my voice tone lower and more approaching towards him/her. And with help of school counselor I'll also try to figure out the reason behind this kind of a behaviour and help him to overcome it.
ReplyDelete- Ms Sabina Abbasi
In order to improve student behaviour first of all expectations should be clear between the authority and student and the child should be aware of his/her rights and know what is the appropriate code of conduct.
ReplyDeleteStudent who demonstrates good behavior should be appreciated and rewarded so that others get motivated.
Students who are showing restlessness and might lead to bad behavior like moving around in class WHEN not required.
Use expressions to convey that the teacher is aware of what has happened.
The teacher should always stick to their word so the student trusts that this person is not just saying for the sake of controlling us.
For a student who is constantly distrupting the class in order to gain the teacher's attention I would keep the child engage in the class giving him the assignment of his interest or assign him responsibilities which keeps him busy.
ReplyDeleteStudents must be trained to follow the code of conduct in the School, to maintain discipline.
ReplyDeleteGuidelines to good behavior can be printed and displayed in all the classrooms.
Rewards for good behavior such as Note of appreciation, Bonus points etc motivate the students to be well behaved.

ReplyDeleteFor lack of motivation in a student - get personal, talk to the child and find out his/her likes and dislikes and let the student feel his/her interests matter to you, make essential changes to the lesson plan and keep some hands on activity ready for such a student. Ask the parent to see that the child gets proper sleep and gets well.
ReplyDeleteInteractive activities and hands on experience help to keep the students engaged.

ReplyDelete1. Praise students whenever they are cooperating with the authority figures. The teacher should act as a role model. And if there is any misbehavior, talk to the student in private and make him realize his fault.
2. The teacher should give an opportunity for the child to speak first. He/she has to listen patiently to what the child has to say. Also try to avoid the discussion in front of the whole class.
ANTAGONISM WITH AUTHORITY
ReplyDeleteWhat can be done to help students improve their interaction with authority figures?
- Students are generally apprehensive about interacting with authority figures as they have been made to believe from childhood that people in authority are strict (e.g. policemen). As teachers, we need to make the children feel confident about themselves and help them to speak without hesitation. We must make them understand that people in authority are not necessarily strict, however we need to be careful about what we say and we must ensure that we do not give incorrect information in any case.

Augmentative student- To deal with augmentative students who argue on confrontation directly, the teacher must change her approach as in rather than confronting in public the teacher must confront the child alone with a sympathetic voice tone. The teacher must avoid using fear instead logically make them understand their mistake which will make the child reflect his actions and rather curb his argumentative attitude.
ReplyDeleteDealing with class clown-
ReplyDeleteI will talk to the student in personal and let him/her know about this kind of an unacceptable behaviour and try to encourage him about his positive attributes. I also think to make this strategy work the teacher should try to gain confidence of the child. I feel the trust factor matters a lot.
We also have to think the different ways to channelize the talent or this humour of the student in a productive manner.
Students who don't ask for help- the teacher should note the names of students who don't usually answer and appreciate them if they do. Try and assign roles to each student so when working in groups (one child can record, another can speak, one can be the time manager, and so on) each child has a task at hand and is accountable for it.
ReplyDeleteRespecting each other's personal space and property is vital for student as well as the teacher, this behavior should be built from the very first day and for students who behave otherwise constantly; some action should be taken by the teacher and management to deal with
CALLING OUT IN CLASS- before the class begins the teacher must set her rules that she won't entertain chorus answers only those who raise their hands will get a chance and if the student still refuses to abide by the instruction then she must avoid the child and ask some other child to answer the same question and after some time the attention seeking child may stop behaving the same and get accustomed to answering in turns.
ReplyDeleteFAILURE TO ASK FOR HELP
ReplyDeleteWhat can you do about a student who fails to ask for help with matters he/she does not fully understand in the curriculum or in the classroom in general?
- Firstly, we need to find out if the student is apprehensive about asking questions or if he/she is simply disinterested in learning. If the student is scared of asking questions, the teacher should frequently check with the child whether he or she has understood by asking questions related to the topic. If he/she has not understood, the teacher should explain again in simple words, making the child feel comfortable. If the child is not interested in learning, the teacher needs to try to generate the child's interest in the topic. However, if the child is still disinterested, he needs to be referred to the counselor.

1)Antagonism with Authority- I think we need to provide students to channelise their energy into productive activities like sports, art & craft, etc. Also, we can give them case studies and ask them to express their views on handling difficult and challenging behaviors and situations. We can teach the children various techniques for mind-body balance so that they develop self-control. We can also motivate and praise students when they behave well with adults. We can model good behavior to students by role playing & other activities. We can teach socially acceptable behaviors to children at school and community level and even talk to them in private for issues concerning them. If all these methods don't work, then meet the parents and refer the students to counsellors and other staff members.
ReplyDelete2)Argumentative Student- I think we should not confront the student in front of whole class or use harsh words. We should first and foremost try to assess and evaluate the situation that led to the argument. Also we should not give empty threats or try to corner the student. We should remain open-minded and calm. We should be assertive and firm. We should be patient and let the child speak his version in detail. We should instill confidence in the child that it's human to commit error but we need to admit our mistake and apologize and move on. We should teach the student to avoid getting imbroiled in such situations in future and act in a responsible manner.
3) Boastful, Attention-Seeking Student- For such student, we should give them position of responsibility like being a monitor in class so that he/ she can be a role model and set a good example. We should also post a code of conduct in classroom which the students can infer too. We should tell them to work on a project of their interest and present it to whole class. We should also ignore annoying comments of such student and encourage them by praising their good deeds. We should attach a good student to be his buddy for a brief period, so that he gets a real role model to imbibe good qualities. We should also have parental engagement to get feedback from them and devise a collaborative strategy to help the child.
4) Calling out in class - We can meet such students in private and explain them about their unacceptable behavior and how their behavior affects the rest of the class adversely. We can build a good rapport with the student so that they can trust us and then we channelise their demanding side into something more conducive. We can take help of school counselor in this and devise up a plan so that this child can divert his energy into something more productive and which caters to his interest. We can even try role play to make the child understand and take responsibility for his actions too. We can give him self evaluation forms too for self-monitoring. Also we can record our lessons and show it in class so that he gets the message directly. We can give the child easy individual tasks and praise them for their efforts to infill confidence in them. We can involve the parents too in this and check if something is bothering the child at home and how we can counter that with collective effort.
5) Failure to ask for help- We can have individual session with such students and try to gauge the problem and help them build their confidence and self-esteem. We can attach a buddy to help the student. We can even give the option to student to write their questions and discuss after class or in some free period. We can even involve parents and counsellors as well. We can praise the child often too whenever he asks a question or does some activity to make him self confident and open up.
1.How can the teacher deal with a child who becomes argumentative upon confrontation?
ReplyDeleteIts is important that the student who is argumentative is not confronted or questioned in front of the class so that they do not feel shamed or embarrassed. The teacher should think and evaluate the situation properly before taking any steps. She should also be calm and composed and allow the child to express themselves freely. The discussion with the student should be positive to instill a sense of confidence towards the teacher.Sometimes in case of primary children role play might work to help them understand their actions and to evaluate and correct themselves. The student should also be sent to the counselor in case none of the steps work.
2. What do you do with a student who calls out answers or comments during class?
The child is attention seeking and hence can be given responsibilities of being a class monitor or a material handler so that he is occupied. The class treaty also needs to be established at the beginning of the academic year which will state how the students need to behave in class. The child can be reminded about this from time to time. This child shouldn't be ignored but should be encouraged and motivated. The student should also be sent to the counselor in case none of the steps work
3.How can you deal effectively with a "class clown"?
This child might be attention seeking and is looking for acceptance in class. He should be spoken to separately outside class about his behavior and what he thinks about it. The teacher can establish a good rapport with the child and explain the consequences of his behavior on the other students. The child should also be assigned responsible roles like being the material handler or being the cleanliness monitor so that he feels responsible and motivated. The student should also be sent to the counselor in case none of the steps work
4.What can you do about a student who fails to ask for help with matters he/she does not fully understand in the curriculum or in the classroom in general?
It is better to talk to the child individually since the child is afraid of speaking out in class and sort out his problem. Keep emphasizing on the fact that No question is stupid and that all questions help the class to learn. A buddy can be assigned to this child to help and motivate them.
5.What do you do with students who lack motivation, have a very negative attitude toward school, and come to class unprepared?
The class needs to be made interesting and challenging so that students aren't bored and are motivated to learn. Look at where the interest of the child lies in (audio visual, kin esthetic) and add this while designing the activities. Introduce certificates for jobs well done which the child can take home. This will, motivate the student. Collaborative activities will perhaps motivate the child to contribute by being a part of a group. Sometimes a one to one talk with the student will help to understand the root cause of his/her problem which could be lack of sleep, hunger etc.
The student should also be sent to the counselor in case none of the steps work
6.What do you do with students who show a lack of respect for adults, peers, their belongings, and the property of others?
The importance of being responsible and respectful needs to be instilled among the students and should be highlighted in the class treaty. These values need to be taught to the students in the Value education class and videos can be shown from time to time about the importance of being respectful and empathetic. Role plays can also be done so that the students think in the shoes of others and this might cause a change in their attitude. The student should also be sent to the counselor in case none of the steps work
6) Hyperactivity-Shift in attention: Such Students in my view should be given activities involving usage of hands. The child should be engaged in indoor work mostly; so that his outdoor activities are limited and he doesn't get chance to go overboard. A timer can be used to keep his activities under check. Also, some time out strategies can be used to counter his over active behavior & tendencies. Various teaching aids such as videos, ppt's can be used. Even parents & counselors can be involved at some stage to help such students.
ReplyDelete7)Lack Of Motivation: I think such students should be given positive reinforcement & lot of praise to boost their confidence & self-esteem. Lessons & Class should be made more interesting & engaging. Various worksheets & projects should be given, so that they feel involved & appreciated. Set some targets & goals & then evaluate & give feedback. Such students can be attached to a buddy too for some while. Teach various value education concepts & get parents involved too. Work out behavioral strategies with Counselor & make a behavior chart in class & give stars for motivation.
8)Lack of Respect: Such Students should be indirectly given moral values. Videos of positivism & respect can be shown to encourage them. Students should be appreciated when respecting elders & cooperating with adults & peers. Role play activities can be carried out. Teachers can act as role model & respect students & their views & lead by example.
